3.2K birds seen during global shorebird counts
- The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation's shorebird team counted 3,280 shorebirds and seabirds from 30 species during this year's Global Shorebird Counts, surveying Sanibel, Captiva, Bunche Beach, and other SCCF properties in Fort Myers.
- The annual counts, held around World Shorebirds Day on Sept. 6, give scientists population data to decide where to focus conservation work.
- The team also resighted several banded birds, including a royal tern first banded in Georgia in 2019 and a piping plover known as Pepper.
- SCCF asks the public to observe shorebirds from a distance, especially during fall migration when birds are resting and recovering.
