After heartbreak at Kona, Estero athlete returns to become a champion
- Kayla Pokorny of Estero won the amateur women's age-group title at the 2026 Ironman World Championship in Kona, finishing in 9 hours, 30 minutes and 57 seconds.
- It was her third attempt at the race after difficult finishes in 2018 and 2022, and she also ended up the overall non-pro women's champion.
- She balanced training of up to 25 hours a week with being a mother of two, and the Southwest Florida triathlon community calls her 'the local legend.'
