This 'Ruthless' exhibit at a Phoenix gallery pays tribute to someone you’ve probably never heard of
- A Phoenix art exhibit called Ruthless pays tribute to Ruth Bird Scholl, a Valley woman who held jobs from hospital work to the Urban League and died early last year.
- Curator Amy Bird, a member of the Eye Lounge art collective, only met Ruth in 2010 when Ruth was 85, though Ruth lived 10 minutes away in Tempe.
- The collaborative show at Modified Arts in downtown Phoenix features work by artists ranging in age from 5 to 80, some of whom never met Ruth.
- Bird said the exhibit aims to show Ruth as a full person rather than a saint, and that Ruth herself would have found the attention hysterical.
