Key points Stairway to Heaven gets $1M
  1. The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation was granted $990,102 by the San Diego River Conservancy to replace the deteriorating wooden steps on the South Fortuna Peak trail, known as the 'Stairway to Heaven,' with natural stone.
  2. The trail draws more than 60,000 hikers a year, and years of heavy use, extreme weather and erosion have left some steps unstable, shifted or gone, with hikers widening the corridor by an estimated 10 to 15 feet on each side.
  3. The project will rebuild about 630 linear feet of stone steps along the existing alignment, improve drainage, add signage and restore habitat, with the city's Parks and Recreation Department providing design review.
