East Village affordable housing projects to be built with eco-friendly 'mass timber'
- Father Joe's Villages broke ground Thursday on an eight-story affordable housing project in East Village built with mass timber, an engineered wood product that cuts emissions and construction time.
- The development at 16th Street and Island Avenue will have 124 apartments, mostly studios and one-bedrooms, with rents affordable to households earning 30% to 60% of the county's median income.
- The builder says mass timber lowered per-unit development costs from $530,000 to $380,000, and a second, taller mass timber project is being planned nearby.
