State budget gives $4.5M to reconnect San Diego communities divided by freeways
- California's state budget includes $4.5 million to help reconnect National City and Southeast San Diego communities that were divided by freeway construction.
- The money will pay for community outreach, planning and technical studies for redeveloping the 43rd Street on and off-ramps to Interstate 805.
- The ramps were once planned as the start of Highway 252, a project Caltrans abandoned in the 1980s after community opposition.
- Actually redeveloping the roughly 57 acres is still years away and depends on future construction funding.
